StrongCoin was an online wallet service for Bitcoin described as a hybrid wallet, launched in 2011 by Ian Purton in London. It encrypted private keys in the user’s browser before they were stored on StrongCoin’s servers, with the aim of preventing theft by server-side access. The service promoted features such as in-browser encryption, offline-style backups via a downloadable PDF, and a built-in marketplace/exchange component with Glidera for purchasing Bitcoin. By the mid-2010s it faced criticism and controversy, and by 2017–2018 development appeared to have stalled; as of 2025 reports indicate the site is effectively abandoned, with users citing withdrawal issues and non-responsive support.
